Chen Kezhi, a famous contemporary oil painter, was born in 1961 in Jiangjin, Chongqing. He didn’t draw any children’s painting in his childhood but drew the large portraits of the state leaders when he was 7 or 8 years old. He was listed in IBC Cambridge, Britain, “Who’s Who in the World” of America, “Predominant Figures in Modern China” and the CD book entitled “Top 100 Artists in Modern China”. He was a member of All-China Federation of Youth for the seventh, eighth and ninth terms and a member of Chongqing Committee of CPPCC for successively 5 terms. In 2000, he became an expert entitled to Government Special Allowance.
In 1978, he was recruited by the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with excellent examination scores, and graduated in 1982.
In 1979, he completed “History”, which was one of the magnum opuses of “Scar School”. This painting won the first Sichuan Cultural and Arts Prize in 1981, the replica of which was collected by National Art Museum of China in 1983 and Lincoln Center of the United States in 1982. The oil painting “Portrait”, one of his class works was exhibited on the First Traveling Exhibition of Fine Arts Institute Students’ Works of China.
In 1980, “History” won the excellent painting prize in Sichuan Youth Art Expo.
In 1981, his “Yanhe River” won the excellent painting prize in the Art Expo Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of CPC.
In 1982, his “Saving Life” was exhibited on the oil painting exhibition of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Beijing.
In 1983, “After the Rain” was exhibited on the Sichuan oil painting exhibition in Shenzhen.
In 1983, paintings like “Far Sky and Far Earth” were exhibited on the small-sized oil painting exhibition of SCFAI in Shandong.
In 1985, “Another Spring” was exhibited on the Moving Chinese Youth Art Expo and was collected by National Art Museum of China.
In 1987, “Another Spring” was exhibited on Chinese oil painting expo in Eastern European countries like Soviet Union, Poland and Hungary.
In 1987, his solo oil painting exhibition was held in Sichuan Exhibition Center. It was the first solo oil painting exhibition organized by Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1987, “There Was No Road in the World” (currently named “The Long March”) was exhibited on the National Fine Arts Expo Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of PLA, and won the excellent painting prize of Sichuan Province.
In 1987, “Winter Dawn” attended the first China Oil Painting Expo and ranked the first in the “China Oil Painting Prize”.
In 1988, he held the solo oil painting exhibition in Chongqing.
In 1988, “Harmonious Noise, 1988” was exhibited on the Seventh National Fine Arts Expo and was collected by a collector.
In 1990, “Son of the East” was exhibited on the Fine Arts Expo for the 11th Asian Games. This painting was designated by Samaranch, the president of IOC, to be collected by IOC Museum in Switzerland.
In 1992, he completed the half-panorama named “Massacre in Nov. 27, 1949”, which is exhibited in Chongqing Gele Mountain Martyr Memorial Hall.
In 1993, he was interviewed by “Oriental Horizon”, a program of CCTV.
In 1993, two of his paintings “Morning of a Girl” and “Home Mountain” attended Hong Kong Christie’s Spring Oil Painting Auction.
In 1994, “Girl Catching Fish” was exhibited on Tokyo International Arts Expo in Japan.
In 1994, “Everest” was exhibited on the 8th National Fine Arts Expo and won the excellent painting prize of Sichuan Province.
In 1995, his paintings attended China Art Masterpiece Expo held in Hong Kong Museum of Art. “Virgin Lake” was auctioned as the cover by Guangzhou Guardian Auctions.
In 1996, “The Sun Setting” (with another name of “Century Love”) attended Hong Kong Christie’s Spring Oil Painting Auction.
In 1996, his paintings were exhibited on the Joint Exhibition of Lin Fengmian’s and Chen Kezhi’s Paintings held in Sanshixuan Gallery in Hong Kong City Hall.
In 1997, his paintings attended the International Arts Expo in Singapore.
In 1997, the documentary named “Experience” which recorded Chen Kezhi’s creation of “Boat Tracker” was broadcasted by CCTV.
In 1998, the large-sized oil painting named “Soul of the Yangtze – Boat Trackers in the Three Gorges” won the golden medal of the 8th “Stars Award” of Ministry of Culture and ranked the first among the “People’s Most Favorite Works”.
In 1999, his “Morning Melody in the Three Gorges” was selected as the predominant painting in Chongqing Hall of the Great Hall in Beijing. It is the first oil painting exhibited in the Great Hall.
In 2000, “Poem of Chaotianmen” was collected by the representative office of Chongqing Municipal Government in Beijing.
In 2002, “Selection of Chen Kezhi’s Oil Paintings” was published.
From 2003, he spent nearly 3 years to complete the large-sized oil painting named “Big Bombing in Chongqing 1938 – 1943”, which won the “Peace Contribution Award” in Hiroshima, Japan. In 2007, this painting was selected as the ending image of the 34-volume TV play series “City of Memory”.
In 2005, five of his oil paintings such as “Think Back on Chibi” were collected by China Three Gorges Museum.
In 2005, his works were again auctioned by Guangzhou Guardian Auctions, Guangzhou Poly Auctions and Beijing Zhonghongxin International Auction Co., Ltd.
In 2006, he won the law suit about the oil painting “Big Bombing in Chongqing”, which had lasted for 3 years. This case was appraised by China 365 Right Protection Web as the first one in the 2006 Top 10 Intellectual Property Right Cases. The Writer’s Publishing House published “’Big Bombing in Chongqing’ – the Poetic and Picturesque Peace Declaration”.
In 2007, Tianjin People’s Fine Arts Publishing House published “Chen Kezhi – a Contemporary Chinese Oil Painter”.
In 2007, Beijing JF Gallery held the solo Three Gorges series exhibition named “Dying and Eternity”.
In 2007, Sino-Foreign Boyi Gallery in Sino-Foreign Cultural Exchange Center of Ministry of Culture held the solo oil painting exhibition named “The View of Ancient Three Gorges”.
In 2007, “Scenery in the Three Gorges – 2007 Chen Kezhi Solo Oil Painting Exhibition” and the expert symposium organized by the Art Service Center of Ministry of Culture were held in National Art Museum of China.
In 2007, “Soul of the Yangtze – Boat Trackers in the Three Gorges” set the record by the highest auction price of 5.6 million yuan in Beijing Changfeng Autumn Auction.
In 2008, he provided funds to help the survivors in the Big Bombing in Chongqing to claim on the Tokyo Court of Japan. |
